Civic body launches ABC to get rid of canine menace

Rourkela:   Canine menace in the Steel City has forced the civic authorities to launch a drive to control its growing population. An action plan has already been drawn up for the purpose. Official sources have put the number of stray dogs in the city at around 16,000 which are causing a lot of problems for pedestrians and bikers, particularly at night. Recalling an incident, Trilochan Mathan, a resident of Koel Nagar said, “Dogs rule the roost at night. If you are returning home at night, they will chase you even though you are riding a bike.” Cases of dog bites are regular features in the city at night. To get rid of this menace, the civic body has implemented Animal Birth Control (ABC) programme.  “Movement of stray cattle and dogs on busy roads is creating traffic problem, even leading to road accidents on many occasion, especially at night. Rising incidents of dog bite is also a matter of serious concern,” informed Prasana Maharana, Nodal Officer of the ABC programme

KUS celebrated Boita Bandana Utsav

Rourkela: In Rourkela, the ‘Kartika Utsav Samiti’ (KUS) celebrated ‘Boita Bandana Utsav’ at Basanti Nagar here. KUS organised a ‘Kabi Sammilani’ and a debate on Boita Bandana on the occasion. Around 50 poets participated in the poetry recital programme. Emphasizing the importance of the historic day, they said it is an occasion to celebrate the great maritime traditions of our ancestors. The centuries-old maritime tradition was focused in the form of poems. Participants in the debate dwelt at length on the culture and heritage of Odisha.

National Law Day observed

Rourkela: Civil Court, Rourkela, today observed National Law Day. It was organised by Taluk Legal Services Committee (TLSC), Panposh here. Speaking on the occasion, Muralidhar Parija, senior advocate said that lawyers should not misuse the law. He spoke on the significance of November 26 as National Law Day. On November 26, 1949, the drafting of the Constitution by the Constituent Assembly, headed by Dr. B R Ambedkar, was completed after 2 years, 11 months and 17 days. It is an important day for legal fraternity in India, he said, adding that all should celebrate and recognize those who have played active role in upholding the rule of law and protected rights and liberties of individual. Shyam Bhakt Mishra, Sub-Collector Panposh, Janab Md Ajmal, the Additional District Judge annd Chairman of TLSC, Ramesh Chandra Bal, President, Bar Association, Rourkela and other lawyers of the Civil Court were present.

PMEGP promotes small enterprises

Fly Ash Bricks are made by the worker Rourkela: Prime Minister’s Employment Generation Programme (PMEGP), a Centrally sponsored scheme, has been beneficial for small industrial sector in the district. The scheme implemented by the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MoMSME) helped small entrepreneurs to set up fly ash bricks. A fly ash brick unit set up under this Centrally sponsored scheme at old Jalda, Lathikata, have been commercially viable. The unit coming under Rourkela Industries centre here now produces 5 lakh bricks per month, generating a profit of about Rs. 3,40,509. Owner of the fly ash unit, Kiran Devi, said that the unit requires around 1000 tonnes of fly ash, 250 tonnes of slag lime, 125 tonnes of gypsum and 150 tonnes of sand with an expenditure of Rs. 8,92,500 to meet the above profit. Tension erupts over sub-standard work

Bhaskar Nanda Rourkela: Tension gripped the slum area in the Sector-6 today over allegation of sub-standard work of a school building with two groups clashing with each other. One persons sustained injuries during the clash. Tanushri Pani, a resident of Bidyanagari basti, said that Bhaskar Nanda, a teacher of Bidyanagari Primary School at Sector-6 (H-Block) today attacked Khirodh Chandra Mohanty, president of Basti Bidyanagari Welfare Committee. The injured has been admitted to Rourkela Government Hospital (RGH). Pani alleged that Nanda had undertaken the construction work of the school building. Puja special magazines still in high demand in Steel City

Rourkela: Long after the puja season, people in the Steel City are looking for special puja editions of numerous vernacular magazines in different stalls. This year, about 94 puja-special magazines containing fiction and non-fiction works of popular writers with attractive covers had hit the bookstores here. These magazines hold special charm for lovers of Odia literature, who are still on the lookout to grab copies left unsold at book shops. Golakh Bihari Sahoo, a book-seller of Koel Nagar Market, said, “This year, he had sold as many as 500 Puja special magazines at different prices  ranging between Rs. 10 to Rs. 150. Puja-special editions have become popular in Odisha for the last several years now.” Even the writers prefer to get their best creations published during this time of the year as they get more readers for their works. UAV in Saranda forest to track Maoist movement

Rourkela: Aware of the regrouping of the Maoists in the Saranda forest every winter, the security personnel this time have decided to take the help of Netra, an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) to track the movements of the red rebels. Netra would fly above the trees and take pictures of the camps of the ultras on the ground. The remote controlled device operated through satellite can also take accurate pictures of arms being used by the rebels, said a police officer engaged in anti-Maoist operation in the region. Saranda forest, the second largest Sal forest in Asia, bordering Jharkhand, is considered as a safe haven for the Maoists. The ultras hold meetings and prepare strategy for their next operations in the forest every year, the officer said. BJP’s organisational polls in Sundargarh completed

Rourkela: The organizational election of Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) of Sundargarh district has been completed. Party sources said, the district was divided into three segments- Panposh, Bonai and Sundargarh organizational districts. All the three incumbent presidents- Dhiren Senapati of Panposh, Manoj Kumar Pradhan of Bonai and Sahadev Xaxa of Sundargarh have been re-elected for another term 2012-14. Elections at three places were peaceful.   

BPUT to add five more PG programmes from 2013 session

Rourkela: Biju Patnaik University of Technology (BPUT), Rourkela today celebrated its fourth foundation day today at the Chhend campus here. Inaugurating the function, Chief Guest Prof. Sunil Sarangi, Director of National Institute of Technology, Rourkela spoke on the importance of the University for both students and staffs. 10 years on, quality education remains a dream for BPUT

Rourkela: Even though 10 years have passed, Biju Patnaik University of Technology (BPUT), which is going to celebrate its 4 th Foundation Day tomorrow, is far from realizing its dream of providing quality education because the technical institute still struggles with vacancies in key posts and lack of proper infrastructure. BPUT had a declared vision of becoming a global brand at the forefront of technical education when it was formed under an Act in 2002. Former President of India, Dr. A P J Abdul Kalam, had laid the foundation stone for this technical university on November 21, 2003. However, after ten years, though the administrative building at its sprawling permanent campus has been completed and handed over to the university authority, four other key buildings, including the advance learning and computer centres, are nearing completion. RGH doctor in vigilance net

Rourkela: The Vigilance sleuths today conducted raids on the residences of assistant surgeon of Rourkela General Hospital (RGH) Dr. Rajat Ranjan Sadual and seized cash worth Rs. 28 lakh, apart from gold ornaments, bank pass books and other incriminating documents.
