KGBV rekindles hope for poor girl students

Rourkela: Poor girls in Sundargarh district, who had to skip school earlier due to poverty or distance , can now forward to starting all over again. The Union HRD ministry, under its Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya (KGBV) scheme, has sanctioned the opening of eight hostels exclusively meant for girls from backward communities in this predominantly tribal district where they would be provided all basic amenities free.

The eight proposed hostels meant for girls from ST, SC, OBC and minority categories would be set up at Subdega, Rajgangpur, Nuagaon, Kuarmunda, Lathikata, Bisra, Gurundia and Lahunipada at a cost of  Rs. 72 lakh each. Each hostels would provide accommodation for about 100 girls.

“Irrespective of the place and category, one can live in these hostels and get proper education with all facilities”, says Rajendra Kumar Patra, a senior SSA (Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan) official of Sundargarh.

All essential amenities and materials to ensure a comfortable stay and proper study ambience for the girl students would be provided in the hostels. These would include water and sanitation, electricity, furniture, study material, bedding and healthcare facilities, sources said.

The minimum area for the hostel buildings would be calculated taking into account provision for basic amenities. Each girl student would have a carpet area of roughly 60 sq.ft, sources told PBD.

“Construction work of these hostels, to be carried out by the SSA department of Sundargarh district, will be completed within 11 months”, Patra said. Stringent action would be taken against the contractor in case of faulty and poor quality construction work, he said.

Besides, budgetary provision of Rs. 1 lakh every month has been made under the scheme towards of one warden, three teachers, one night watchman, one accountant, one peon, three cooks, and three assistants in the each of the eight hostels.

KGBV, a Centrally-sponsored scheme launched in August 2004 to encourage girls from backward communities and remote, inaccessible areas to join school, was merged with the Sarva Siksha Abhiyan on April 1, 2007.

Two hostels at a cost of Rs. 36 lakh each were constructed under the scheme at Bonai and Koida in the 10th Five Year Plan in 2004-05.
