Photos that speak ‘in defence of civilization’

Rourkela: ‘A picture says a thousand words’ is an adage that aptly describes photographs by  A N Maniyappan, which were on display at 8th National Conference of Steel Worker’s Federation of India (SWFI) at Bhanja Bhawan.

The 68-year old man from Ernakulam district of Kerela, exhibited his rare photographs and collected ones on the theme ‘In defence of Civilization’.

The exhibition featured 400 collections of photographs on a wide range of subjects. The subjects of these photographs are about martyrs’ column, civilization, humanity, golden era of movements, loot of national property, historic moments, anti-communalism, capitalism, imperialism, industrial revolution, trade unionism, and movement against liberalism and steel workers’ movement.

The photo exhibition attracted thousands of people in and around the city. “The younger generation learns a lot from this photography and get to understand what had happened in the past,” said a spectator H S Mishra.

“The gallery has rare photos speaking of atrocities during war, and tragedies that are still hampering human civilization,” said Bishnu Mohanty, Chairman, Reception Committee of National Conference of SWFI.

The layout and design of these photographs have been made by Dilip M, Sabareesh Ravi and Rethish KR, said Maniyappan.

He says the photos shown on the exhibition have been collected from various foreign magazines, friends, internet and other sources. “It took me 15 years to collect these photographs and they have already been exhibited at 81 places across India- Bangalore, New Delhi, Madras, Tirpur, Coimbatore, West Bengal, Odisha and Kerela,” he added.

Muralidhar Parija, president of Press Club, said that the photo exhibition organised by comrades speaks volumes of working class movement.

Maniyappan said that the photographs illustrate attack on cultural liberty and human dignity, human rights violation and tragic moments of World War-I. “At the root of these are insatiable greed for imperialism and the brutality of fascism. Human Civilization has become poorer. The past cannot be brought back but the future can be ensured. We must defend the dignity and creativity enshrined in human civilization,” he added.
