One dead, three injured in road mishap at Baramunda over-bridge

Bhubaneswar: A 24-year-old woman was killed and three passenger including driver were seriously injured following a road accident at Baramunda over-bridge here on Sunday. The deceased was identified as Deba kalyani Tripathy who hails from Puri and was travelling in her family car (Registration no- OR02K1010) for some personal work in the city, police sources said. The car met an accident while the driver trying to overtake a motor vehicle lost control and collided with divider of the Baramunda over-bridge. During its journey from Khandagiri to CRPF, the car turned twice after it collided with the bridge, sources said. Tripathy died at the spot while the other passengers including the driver in a critical condition rushed to Capital hospital here and later referred to a private hospital after their health condition deteriorated.

Mahanga women harassed since 2009; still to get justice

Victim Anjali Pradhan Bhubaneswar: In yet another case of women harassment in the state, a woman in the Mahanga area of Cuttack district, just managed to escape from the clutches of hooligans who tried to set her on fire. Like the case of the Tikiri lady teacher, the woman had also approached several police officials of her district to help her out but gone unheeded. She made rounds of the temples of justice, but all her efforts went in vain. The hooligans of the woman’s village have been threatening her of life if she returns home again. According to reports, the victim, Anjali Pradhan is a single woman of Govindpur under the Mahanga police limits in Cuttack district. Illegal sale of kerosene; two detained, 700 litres seized

Bhubaneswar: The Civil Supplies Department officials have seized 700 litres of kerosene, meant for the Public Distribution System (PDS), from two persons in the city on Friday. The accused are identified as Sarbeswar Patnaik and Purna Chandra Sahu of unit-4 market where they were running the illegal sale of kerosene in their cycle store. According to sources, to put a tap on the malpractices in the unit-4 area, the Civil Supplies Department officials have geared them up to conduct raids in all the shops. The team seized 700 litres of kerosene, meant for public distribution and detained the duo Patnaik and Sahu for selling in open market. Interrogation in to the incident is going on, said the official sources.

It’s time for traffic violators to pay fines through credit cards

Bhubaneswar: For traffic violators who make an excuse of not having ready cash to pay the fine will be made compulsory as the Commissionerate Police (CP) is planning to come out with an alternative of collecting fine through credit cards from them. For this purpose, the CP seek help of a Hyderabad-based private company to get start-up with the gadget, a personal digital assistant (PDA) machine that can issue e-challans and collect fine through credit cards. "With the start of the new gadget, it will reduce time and gathering of traffic violator during checking. The gadget can generate challans immediately which will put a stop on issuing challan by writing down on a receipt book," said Twin City Commissioner of Police Dr Rajendra Prasad Sharma. The gadget will be launched in Bhubaneswar only, he said. OHPCL donates one crore towards CMRF

Bhubaneswar: Odisha Hydro Power Corporation Ltd. (OHPCL) contributed one crore rupees towards the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund (CMRF) to help the people affected by the recent Cyclone “Phailin” followed by flood. The Cheque was handed over to the Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik on Tuesday by Sahadev Khatua, MD, OHPCL and senior officials of the company at the State Secretariat here in the presence of Arun Kumar Sahoo, Minister of Energy and PK Jena, Commisioner-cum-Secretary, Department of Energy. Crime Branch arrests Flourish India director for duping investors across state

Bhubaneswar: City-based non-banking financial company Flourish India director Aditya Kumar Bisoi was arrested by the Economic Offence Wing (EOW) of the State Crime Branch here on Monday night for allegedly duping investors across the state. Crime Branch DIG Rajesh Kumar informed that the EOW personnel arrested Bisoi on the basis of several complaints lodged by the investors against the company at Barapali police station of Bargarh district. He would be produced before a local court in Barapali on Tuesday, the DIG added. Kumar further said the company duped investors more than Rs 100 crore in the State. The EOW is investigating about the collection and transaction of money and other details of their investments, he added. The company had been allegedly collecting money illegally through its 132 branches across the State during last eight years, said the sources. US National William gets conditional bail

Bhubaneswar: US national William Michel Hurtubise (27) whose bail plea was rejected on September 27 this year by a local court here got a sigh of relief on Monday after the Sessions Court granted conditional bail on a surety deposit of Rs 50,000 after a month of his arrest. William was arrested on September 18 by the commissionerate police on the charge of possessing illegal ammunition of eight live bullets in his luggage during a routine check at the Biju Patnaik Airport here. William was released on conditional bail on Monday evening from Jharpada Special Jail here. Bhubaneswar: Paying respect to policemen who died in line of duty, the Commissionerate Police (Bhubaneswar-Cuttack) observed 54th Police Commemoration Day at Reserve Police ground here on Monday. The top most officials of the Commissionerate were present in the ceremony. The day is observed in honour of 10 CRPF jawans who died in India-China war in 1959. Talk Bhubaneswar conducts relief and sanitation work in Madhuban

Bhubaneswar: Talk Bhubaneswar, a city-based voluntary organization and ‘Ek Chesta’ another NGO jointly took an initiative on Sunday to distribute relief material and carried out sanitation work in ward number-7 in Madhuban in Baripada as severe damage occurred after Phailin and flood hit these areas. Eight members of Talk Bhubaneswar team led by Prateek and Vinay Wilson Tiria went to the affected place along with relief material of 1500 clothes for men, women and children. They also distributed 100kg flattened rice (chuda), biscuits and water pouch to the ward people. All relief material was collected before the occasion of ‘Joy of Giving Week’, a donation week that held in between October 2 to October 8 from different colleges and individuals, informed Prateek. “Except the relief work after Phailin, our team had done restoration work of whole Saheed Nagar Durgapuja Mandap here within five hours by 10 member team,” added Prateek.

Bhadrak RKSY violation: NHRC seeks report from CS within 4 weeks

Bhubaneswar: The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has issued notice to Chief Secretary (CS) over the inaction of the State administration in ensuring basic human rights and not following the applicable laws so far while executing Reba-Kapali Sanskar Yojana (RKSY) in Bhadrak district and sought the report within four weeks. The NHRC passed this order while acting on a petition filed by two freedom fighters namely Bhadrak District Freedom Fighters’ Association president Ramahari Goswami and secretary Shyam Sunder Behera. They have raised the basic human rights issue involved in the RKSY project since it has been executed without following the provisions of Land Acquisition Act and the Orissa Rehabilitation and Resettlement Policy. Man held for duping job aspirants

Bhubaneswar: The Commissionerate Police on Sunday arrested a 34-year-old man on the charge of duping job aspirants in the state. The accused was identified as Subash Parida of Jamapada under Patkura police station in Kendrapada district now staying in Saheed Nagar, forwarded to court today. Parida working as a supervisor in a private mobile tower company in Saheed Nagar has duped crores of rupees from several job aspirants promising them to provide job in a shipping company. Parida has duped nearly 100 job aspirants including matriculate and engineers of Kendrapada, Cuttack and Khurda districts and duped with Rs 1.2 crore from them, collecting money ranging from Rs 50,000 to Rs 2 lakh. Twin city Commissioner Dr Rajendra Prasad Sharma Bhubaneswar: Contrary to the claim of the son and husband of the murdered Bachan Sudha Pattanayak that more than one person was involved in killing her, Twin city Commissioner of Police Dr Rajendra Prasad Sharma on Tuesday clarified that the arrested security guard Dipti Ranjan Patnaik was the only accused in committing the offence. Basing on the psychoanalysis report which was conducted on the accused last week to know whether more than one person was involved in the crime, the Commissioner said “The forensic psychoanalysis assessment report revealed that Dipti was the only offender in the crime. Dipti Ranjan Patnaik Bhubaneswar: After taking security guard Dipti Ranjan Patnaik on five-day police remand from Jharpada Jail to conduct various test on him following interrogations about the heinous crime in connection with the broad day-light murder of city-based businessman’s wife Bachansudha Pattanayak on September 11 in the city, the Commissionerate Police conducted psychoanalysis test on him on Thursday. The test was conducted by an expert Dr Asha Shrivastav, a clinical psychologist of the Central Forensic Science Laboratory in New Delhi and is also working for the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI), to examine the mental status of the accused. Nearly 200 more posts of SIs needs to be filled up to carry out many tasks like investigation, crime prevention, day and night patrolling, Traffic control, documentation and many more in the twin city, informed a senior officer, requesting anonymity.
